Purpose of Assignment:

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a problematic situation inherent to nursing leadership and provide a rational solution which addresses the problem

Student Approach to Assignment:

I approached this assignment using real life experience from working short staffed on a very busy unit. I value quality patient care and this paper reflects that by displaying real nursing problems that need to be addressed in order to provide the best possible care that patients deserve. This assignments helped me learn and explore other avenues to help with fighting staff shortages.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio:

 This paper is important to have a part of my portfolio because it discusses a very serious, ongoing problem in nursing: staffing shortage. This topic is important to me because I know what it is like to work while being short staffed. It is scary and dangerous, it is a problem that needs to be fixed. No nurse should have to work in fear of losing their license because they are working on a unit that is short staffed, unable to provide the best possible care they came to work to provide.

 

Critical Thinking

An example of problem solving in this paper would be the discussion on how to recruit more staff for hire. In the paper I state a few different ways to recruit more staff could be partnering with local nursing school, allowing shadow experiences, and promoting volunteer work so that potential employees can get an idea of what it would be like to work for the facility. 

Professionalism 

o Advocated for professional standards of practice using organizational and political processes:

Throughout the paper it is stated that nursing shortage is a problem. This paper advocates for professional practice standards by expressing the need for better nurse to patient ratios and safer staff numbers.
