401 – Intro to Professional Development for Baccalaureate Nursing Practice  

Purpose of Assignment:

The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to discover his or her personal philosophy of nursing, as it exists at the beginning of the academic journey toward the BSN.

Student Approach to Assignment:

I approached this assignment by reflecting on the principles and values that guide my everyday life and my work life. I approached the assignment this way because I needed to really reflect on what was important to me and review how I translate that into my work as a registered nurse. In this assignment I the personal values that helped create my personal philosophy of nursing.  I learned many new theories of nursing that also align with my beliefs but I also learned how unique of a profession nursing is.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio: 

This assignment is included in my portfolio because it demonstrates and displays the values I hold close to my heart and also gives insight on what to expect of me as a nurse. When viewing my portfolio those who come across this paper will understand why I practice nursing the way I do. This assignment represents me a nurse by showcasing the values and beliefs I put into my practice. It also exemplifies the passion I have for the nursing profession.

• Critical Thinking

o Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional practice 

Reviewing nursing as a professional and incorporating other nursing theories and principles that helped to create my own personal philosophy of nursing. One principle I used to create my nursing theory came from the American Nurses Association (2015) that states “the nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.”  

• Professionalism

  • Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical situations that incorporate moral concepts, , professional ethics, and advocacy for patient well-being and preferences

    • I apply an ethical decision-making and legal guidelines by applying the research I found while writing this paper. I also use what I have began to learn in my BSN program.

• Leadership 

o Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as member of the interdisciplinary health care team 

In the paper my values of the profession are stated as having a caring attitude, trustworthiness, accountability, responsibility, and reliability. I also state that one of the many roles a nurse plays in a patient’s life is being an advocate because many times, as a nurse, we are dealing with patients who are in a very vulnerable state.
