NURS 403 – Transition to BSN Practice

Purpose of Assignment:

The purpose of this assignment is to guide you through a process of self-reflection and self-evaluation to discover the scope of your personal and professional development while enrolled in the RN>BSN nursing program at Old Dominion University.

Student Approach to Assignment

My approach to this assignment was to reflect on all of the course I have completed during my time in the program, reflect on my nursing practice prior to entering the program, and reflect on my practice now at the end of the program. This approach helped me evaluate how my nursing practice has evolved.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio

I believe this is one of the most important papers I have written. It shows my reflection of the RN-to-BSN program and almost all that I have gained (not everything can be reflected on paper alone). This represents how much I have gained and grown from my studies and how much I can achieve as a nurse and as a student

  • Critical Thinking

    • Engages in creative problem solving

      • In the paper I reflect on how I learned how to engage in creative problem solving with the assignment of my business case analysis paper in NURS 490- nurse leadership. I discussed how I was tasks with choosing a nursing problem and coming up with a solution for that problem

  • Nursing Practice

    • Performs therapeutic interventions that incorporate principles of quality management and proper safety techniques

      • In the paper I give an example of how when I worked with cardiac patients, upon discharge I performed therapeutic interventions that incorporated sitting down with them and helping them understand their condition as well as how to manage their treatment moving forward.

  • Communication

    • Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups using a variety of media and Demonstrates skills in using technology, informatics, and communication devices that support safe nursing practice

      • I reflect on how when patients speak a different language we are able to use variety of media to communicate with them, one being the Sally translator which connects you with someone who speaks the language you are seeking to translate. I use informatics when it comes to documentation of communication barrier and translation, and establish this supports safe nursing practice by allowing my patient and myself to be able to understand and consent to the care that will be provided.

  • Teaching

    • Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to patients, and families

      • I reflect on my assignment in I completed in NURS 402-nurse as educator where I was tasked to create a needs assessment survey for a teaching plan.

  • Research

    • Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research

      • In this section of my paper I state how I take the different types of literature and apply them to my nursing practice as a labor and delivery nurse.

    • Applies research-based knowledge from nursing as the basis for culturally sensitive practice

      • This section I state how I learned to apply research-based knowledge to provide culturally sensitive care by giving the example of when I had a Middle Eastern patient whose religion only allowed her to see female providers.

  • Leadership

    • Delegates and supervises the nursing care given by others while retaining  accountability for the quality of care provided

      • The example I give is when I tasked my OB tech to get vitals on my patients while I helped with a delivery of another patient, I then went back to ensure the task was complete and learned that it was not fully completed. I then completed the task myself but learned that it is always important to take accountability for care that is delegated to the patients I am responsible for.

  • Professionalism

    • Understands the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and health care delivery

      • Discussion of making sure I understand legal and regulatory processes by providing the example of HIPPA violations and one way I avoid them.

    • Demonstrates accountability for one’s own professional practice as well as limits to one’s own scope of practice.

      • I give the example of how I have seen some nurses provide small tasks that may not be in our scope of practice because they know how to complete them and may have a good report with the provider of that patient, but how it is important to always practice within the scope of nursing care to avoid legal repercussions.
