Teaching Project Summary Paper

Nurs 402 – Nurse Educator  

Purpose of Assignment:

The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient or professional group.

 

Student Approach to Assignment:

For this project I chose to create a teaching class for mothers who planned to breastfeed their newborns. I have personal passion for this subject because when I was breastfeeding my children I had no idea what I was doing and had to do so much research on my own in order for me to be successful. I took what I learned as well as evidence based research and applied to my teaching plan.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio: 

            I believe this assignment should be included in my portfolio because it shows how I am able to take an issue, create a solution, and execute that solution in order to help my patients. This assignment reflects me as a student by displaying my ability to problem solve.

 

•  Nursing Practice

  • Establishes and/or utilizes outcome measure to evaluate effectiveness of care​

    • In this paper I go into detail about providing mothers education in order to be successful with breastfeeding journey. I measure the outcomes of my teachings by holding post teaching discussions as well as quizzes stated in the paper.​

 

• Teaching

• o Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to patients, and families

  • In the paper I state how I approach my patients when it comes to the education I will be providing. I not only help the mothers, but also the support person so that they are able to assist upon discharge.

 

o Uses information technologies to communicate health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention

• I use research and charting in order to communicate progression on teaching material. I also give this information to my patients in order to help them prevent diseases such as mastitis or clogged milk ducts.

 

o Uses informatics to enhance one’s own knowledge base to support teaching

• I state in the paper how I use charting to tract progression, research and handout materials for mothers and their support person, and teach back demonstration.

• Communication 

o Uses therapeutic communication within the nurse-patient relationship

• In the paper I state that I always listen to my patient preferences on how they would like to feed their newborn. Whatever way they choose, I am there to be of assistance to my patients, mom and newborn.

o Adapts communication methods to patients with special needs

• Adaption of communication methods is exemplified by first assessing my patients learning preference. Whether it is teaching, reading material, hand-outs, or video, I tailor learning lessons to the patient I am teaching.

o Accesses and utilizes data and information from a wide range of sources to enhance patient and professional communication 

• In my paper I state that I utilize multiple sources of education material tailored to my patient’s needs. I have found that handouts and hands on demonstration work the best.
