Nurs 412 – Ethics, Law, Economics, and Health Policy

Purpose of Assignment:

The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student the opportunity to complete an in-depth analysis of a health issue in order to serve as an expert witness advocating for community health nursing and consumers.

Student Approach to Assignment:

This was a group assignment so we split our work between three people. I learned to be more politically conscious as a nurse instead of just worrying about what happens at the bedside. I approached this project by readjusting my vision of the nurse as well as a potential patient.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio:

This project was important to include in the portfolio because it dealt more with the political side of nursing. Personally this reflected growth because before I never really thought about nursing outside of being at the bedside. This showed me more of the political side of nursing and how we as nurses can make a difference in different healthcare bills that are or are not passed, as well as how it affects nurses at the bedside and our patients.

  • Professionalism
    • Advocates for professional standards of practice using organizational and political practice

      • We discuss the need for transparent healthcare cost. We state that it is important for people to know upfront cost from their insurances so that they can choose the best fit for themselves as well as their families.

  • Critical Thinking

    • Evaluates nursing care outcomes through the acquisition of data and the questioning of inconsistencies.

      • In this leave behind we discuss the Healthcare Cost Transparency Act. Here we have to evaluate the how this Act can potentially affect patients and how they choose their insurances. We use comparison and contrasting based on data collected from the proposed Act.
